Madigan and Bradley Victorious at NAFS Caged Fury 5
National Finals Taking Shape
10/5/08 — Cleveland, OH: After over 2 years away from the cage, former kickboxing star Ryan “The Lion” Madigan made an impressive return to MMA on Saturday night with a first round submission win over Team Gurgel’s Brandon Pierce (5-2) at NAAFS Caged Fury 5. Madigan now 4-0 in professional MMA competition showed fight fans that he is more then just a devastating striker and has made the transition from a world class kickboxer to a well rounded mixed martial artist.
“I think this win has put Madigan back on the MMA map as far as elite welterweights go” said NAAFS president Greg Kalikas”. “Madigan has all the tools to be a world champion in this sport someday soon” Kalikas added.
In the nights co-main event Paul Bradley improved to 8-0 with a dominating performance over Pat Horner (6-2) winning a unanimous decision. One judge scored the fight 30-26 for Bradley while both remaining judges had the bout 30-27. A product of the UFC and Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show, Bradley showed a vast improvement with his striking which is scary considering the collegiate all American wrestling background from the Team Lion Heart fighter. After the win, Bradley announced to fans in attendance that he plans on making the move down to 170 lbs for his next bout.
In preliminary action, the NAAFS national amateur series took one more step towards the nation finals December 6th in Cleveland. “Big” John Hawk punched his ticket to December by taking out NAAFS veteran Felix `The Cat” Catheline (6-4) via Tapout from strike in the first round keeping his unbeaten record in tact now at 4-0.
Hawk will be facing Pennsylvania’s Adam Farrell in the finals as Farrell dispatched Pete Hunter (6-2) by first round submission. Farrell has shown his versatility winning his last two bouts by submission after two KO’s to start his career. The two unbeaten heavyweights will now meet in December for the most prestigious title in amateur MMA.
In light heavyweight semi-final action it was Dane Bonnigson of Bowling Green Ohio improving to 5-0 with a submission victory over Josh Moore (6-2). On the other side of the bracket it was Toronto, Canada’s Marc Strickland taking out a stubborn Josh Miller in a very competitive bout. Strickland won a unanimous decision over the New York native while escaping early trouble setting the stage for a great showdown December 6th between Strickland and Bonnigson.
The light weights took center stage when top ranked Jeremy Joles (5-2) took on the always aggressive LA Hampton (6-2) in a semi-final bout. After a slow start both fighters stood toe to toe in what looked more like a boxing match then an MMA fight with Hampton squeaking out a decision in one of the night’s most exciting bouts.
Hampton will face unbeaten Josh Johnson (8-0) of Toledo, Ohio in December after Johnson took out #2 ranked Dan Jones (5-2) with an overpowering display of wresting setting up a classic showdown between striker vs grappler for NAAFS gold.
Lyle Sancoucie bounced back from his first career loss to beat nationally ranked Chuck Schilling (6-2) for the right to fight for the national featherweight title. Sansoucie will rematch top ranked Eric Noel (6-2) on December 6th in a highly anticipated title bout.
