The following is a report for TUF 6, episode nine from the official TUF 6 website written by UFC.com's Thomas Gerbasi:
CAUTION: SPOILERS INCLUDED — Team Serra romped through the preliminary round on season six of The Ultimate Fighter, winning six of eight fights. Will their success continue in the quarterfinals, or will Team Hughes be able to upset the odds and move two of their fighters forward?
Not if coach Matt Serra has his way, as he makes it clear in the quarterfinal matchups meeting with UFC President Dana White that he wants to pit both of Hughes’ remaining fighters, Mac Danzig and Tommy Speer, against each other right away.
“We want to put the nail in the coffin,” said Serra, but his team doesn’t seem to agree, as they want to take on Danzig and Speer in separate bouts, beat them, and take Hughes’ team out of the competition entirely. With Serra’s plan, one of Hughes’ fighters would be guaranteed a spot in the semifinals.
Eventually, the quarterfinal matchups are determined, and they are as follows:
Mac Danzig vs John Kolosci
Matt Arroyo vs Troy Mandaloniz
George Sotiropoulous vs Richie Hightower
Ben Saunders vs Tommy Speer
Of course, Serra can’t corner both of his fighters when team members clash, so White insists that the UFC welterweight champ sends two of his fighters to Team Hughes to be cornered by the former champ. Serra isn’t happy with this arrangement and opts for a coin toss to determine which two members of his team go over to the opposing camp.
The coin is flipped and Richie Hightower and Matt Arroyo are sent to Team Hughes. Hightower asks for a meeting with Hughes and his coaching staff to express their concerns, and Hughes calls the meeting “unprofessional” while making it clear that he was brought in to coach and will do his best to lead Hightower and Arroyo to victories.
In the first quarterfinal matchup, Danzig squares off against Kolosci, and the difference in experience is apparent from the opening bell. Eventually, Danzig secures a rear naked choke late in the first round and submits his game opponent to move on to the semifinals.
