When Stephen Thompson watches film of Rory MacDonald, he sees one of the best fighters in the world.
This Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 89, “Wonderboy” will get to test his skills against the former title contender in a five-round welterweight main event.
“He’s the best well rounded fighter that I’ve faced,” said Thompson, during an interview on UFC Tonight recently. “He’s got great standup, He’s got good wrestling and phenomenal jiu-jitsu. He’s the No. 1 contender for a reason. I’ve got good guys in my camp and we’ve got a good game plan going out there to keep it standing and keep it where I feel most comfortable – on my feet.”
Following a win over former champion Johny Hendricks, Thompson did believe he was ready to challenge for UFC gold. Instead, champion Robbie Lawler meets Tyron Woodley, while Saturday’s winner will likely get the next crack at the belt.
“I was little disappointed I have to fight one more time after defeating Hendricks,” Thompson admitted. “Sometimes you have to fight one more time to prove it to the fans and the UFC. He’s a buddy of mine and we’re going to punch each other in the face on Saturday.”
