Strikeforce: Houston Weigh-In Result: 4 Fighters Miss, Fights Still On

MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

The official weigh-ins for this weekend's Strikeforce: Houston event were held earlier today at the same Toyota Center that the fights will take place this Saturday night, August 21, airing live on the Showtime premium-cable channel.

The weigh-ins were noteworthy, as at no point did two fights go by without someone failing to reach their contractually agreed upon weight. Despite the unusual amount of fighters that missed the mark, all fights will go on as scheduled, including both title fights.

Below are the final official numbers, including all of the notes on what went down with those who missed weight.

Showtime TV Fights:

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title:
-Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (203 3/4 lbs.) vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (203 1/2 lbs.)

Strikeforce Middleweight Title:
-Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Tim Kennedy

-K.J. Noons (156 1/2 lbs.) vs. Jorge Gurgel (154 3/4 lbs.) *
-Bobby Lashley (246 lbs.) vs. Chad Griggs (228 1/2 lbs.)

Internet Stream Undercard Fights (available via

-Daniel Cormier (249 lbs.) vs. Jason Riley (256 1/2 lbs.)
-Andre Galvao (170 3/4 lbs.) vs. Jorge “Macaco” Patino (170 3/4 lbs.) **

Non-Televised Preliminary Fights:

-Vinny Magalhaes (144 1/2 lbs.) vs. Rocky Long (146 1/4 lbs.) ***
-Kier Gooch (155 1/2 lbs.) vs. Adam Schindler (155 1/2 lbs.)
-Jose Santibanez (154 1/4 lbs.) vs. Reynaldo Trujillo (155 1/4 lbs.)
-Humberto DeLeon (127 1/4 lbs.) vs. Chad Robichaux (131 lbs.) ****
-Chad Cook (205 1/4 lbs.) vs. Arteneus Young (204 lbs.)

* Noons missed weight by a 1/2 pound, even with the one-pound-over allowance. He was told he had an hour to drop the weight, but of course it came as no surprise that Gurgel didn't hesitate in taking the fight regardless. This means Noons doesn't have to worry about cutting the remaining half-pound.

** Patino was not at the original weigh-ins. He did, however, officially weigh-in after the conclusion of the regular weigh-ins.

*** Long missed weight by 1/2 pound. Magalhaes, much like Gurgel, accepted the fight as a catch-weight bout.

**** Robichaux missed weight. He was given an hour to drop the excess pound, but his opponent as well accepted the fight.
