Former number one welterweight contender Thiago Alves misssed weight again prior to an important UFC 117 bout against Jon Fitch and the American Top Team star talked about the weight cut this week and what his thoughts were on not making weight…again.
“It was just a half-pound, so I'm sure my body could have flushed it out,” he said. “But I didn't want to. I just wanted to concentrate on the fight. It was just easier for me to give up the money. Yes, we fight for money, but you also fight to win, and at the time, I was thinking I didn't want to cut the weight. I was just focused on getting ready to fight. When you're cutting weight and dehydrated, you don't always think right. In the future, that won't happen again. It can't happen again.”
This begs the question. Did Alves know he wasn't going to make weight prior to getting on the scale and how concerned about it was it he? He was obviously fine with throwing away the $12,000 he could have made had he been able to cut a half pound.
It's not a great attitude to have when your main job is make weight and fight. It would have been interesting to see the UFC's approach to Alves had he picked the win up in that fight since it was for a crack on GSP.
Do you think Alves will continue to fight in the 170lb. division? Dana White wasn't too keen on it during the UFC 117 saying that Alves would be moving to middleweight
