Ultimate Warrior Challenge Returns On October 11th

Fairfax, VA (September 16, 2008) — The buzz has begun as the Washington area’s burgeoning mixed martial arts community braces for the return of the Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) — the DC area’s only all pro MMA Cage-Fighting Show — to the Patriot Center on Saturday, October 11. In addition to the Main Event (Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt vs. Rick “The Jet” Roufous) and co-Main Event (Mike “The Hulk” Easton vs. Johnny “The Magician” Dodson) match ups, UWC-CONFRONTATION promises equally outstanding action to round out the card. Carmelo “The Fury” Marrero, Ryan Lopez and James “Binky” Jones, who have fought for top organizations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, BodogFIGHT, and Elite XC, are among a talented group to be featured on the Oct 11th UWC event.

In one of the featured bouts, UFC Vet and Cage Rage Champion Marrero (7-2-0) takes on rising star Lopez (5-2-0), who like Britt, will appear as a participant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 8. Marrero, who trains out of world renowned American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, is a former wrestler known for using his grappling abilities to control opponents, a skill best displayed in his impressive win over UFC vet Cheick Kongo in October of 2006. Marrero is undefeated in his last three contests, including a win by a rear naked choke against Rader McHugh last month.

Marrero will have his hands full with the resilient Lopez. Hailing from Oklahoma City and fighting out of Academy Martial Arts, Lopez is seen as a fighter on the rise based on his scheduled participation on season 8 of the popular TUF reality series.

Fighting out of Ground Control in Maryland, Baltimore native “Binky” Jones is a veteran of both BodogFIGHT and Elite XC. This Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt and a submission wrestling instructor recently defeated Calvin Kattar by a rear naked choke on national TV as part of Elite XC’s primetime CBS show. Jones is looking to extend his current three-fight winning streak when he takes on another regional fighter, Kyle Baker.

Sure to bring a strong crowd from the nearby Valley area of Virginia is the Harrisonburg-based Kyle Baker. One of the “Fabulous Baker Boys” — former state champion wrestlers turned MMA fighters — Kyle (4-3) fights out of Richmond’s MMA Institute and will have manager Rick McCoy working his corner. His older brother, Beau (5-0) is also scheduled to be on the Oct. 11 card (opponent TBD). The Bakers recently joined forces with McCoy and train and teach at the organization’s 6,000 square foot facility in Harrisonburg.

Former Bowie, MD resident, Marcus Foran is a former National Prep wrestling champion at DeMatha High School who brings a devastating ground and pound game and intense focus to the cage. Foran, a former special forces Marine also holds a black belt in Karate awarded to him by a Japanese family after six years of intense training in Okinawa Japan. Foran is currently located out of the renowned FIT NHB in Albuquerque, NM, where he trains with current WEC welterweight champion, Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit. Foran scored an impressive victory by way of armbar submission against Tenyeh Dixon in front of a hometown crowd at UWC–INVASION last April at the Patriot Center.

Standing in Foran’s way is Steve “Storm” Sawyer, a former U.S. Army soldier from Columbia, SC. A product of the Columbia Submission Fight Team, Sawyer is currently riding a four-fight win streak, most recently defeating Brandon Gaines by way of TKO at the Powerhouse Fighting Championships in May.

All fights are subject to change.
