WAMMA To Become Rankings Provider For ESPN's MMA Live

Orlando, Florida – Starting on March 18, the Top Ten fighter rankings from the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) will debut each month on ESPN.com's original mixed martial arts studio show, MMA Live.

MMA Live is a weekly 30-minute show produced by ESPN Digital Media that covers the mixed martial arts landscape. Hosted by Jon Anik, with analysis from UFC lightweight title contender Kenny Florian and Newark Star-Ledger columnist Franklin McNeil, MMA Live features breaking news, fight analysis, instructional segments, and interviews with the sport's top names.

WAMMA Vice President Pat Miletich, the first-ever UFC lightweight champion, will join Anik, Florian, and McNeil in-studio to break down the March WAMMA rankings.

“Since WAMMA's inception, a primary goal of ours has been to launch a top ten fighters poll, in the mold of the Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls for college football,” said WAMMA CEO Dave Szady, a 33-year veteran of the FBI. “We're thrilled that those rankings are now a reality and that they will be featured on MMA Live.”

WAMMA's ranking system differs from rankings issued by boxing's sanctioning bodies.

“WAMMA also has no influence on the ranking and only serves to administer them,” Szady stated, before continuing, “The value of our rankings is that they are not dependent on any one person, any one media outlet, or any one MMA entity. WAMMA has entrusted more than thirty independent media personnel from various outlets to ensure the objectivity and independence in the rankings. Our rankings are based solely on performance in the ring and cage.”

Added Miletich, “In order for MMA to continue to evolve it's essential to have a universal ranking system that crosses all promotional lines.”

Chaired by CBSSports.com contributing writer and FiveOuncesOfPain.com publisher Sam Caplan, WAMMA's pollster committee convenes on a monthly basis to vote on the top ten fighters at heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight.

With its mission statement of “One Champion, One King,” WAMMA aims to ultimately crown undisputed champions in every major weight class and currently recognizes Fedor Emelianenko as its undisputed heavyweight champion and Shinya Aoki as its undisputed lightweight champion.

WAMMA's rankings committee crosses all media boundaries and features noted MMA experts such as Anik, FoxNews.com's Mike Straka, Michael David Smith of AOL's MMA Fanhouse, Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports, Ben Fowlkes of SI.com, and CBSSports.com's Todd Martin.

After WAMMA's rankings are revealed each month on ESPN.com's MMA Live, the public will be able to view them on WAMMA's official web site located at www.GoWAMMA.com.
