Exclusive: Cung Le Looks Towards April Or May Return

He started off his MMA career with six straight victories, the hightlight being a third round stoppage of Frank Shamrock to win the Strikeforce middleweight title when a kick broke Shamrocks arm in March of 2008 but following that win Cung Le took a break from MMA to pursue a career in Hollywood that would put his fighting career on hold.

Le would relinquish the title after not defending it for over a year only to return to action in December of last year against Scott Smith. In a bout that looked like Le would take a decision victory, the tides changed in the third and final round when Smith rocked Le and sent him to canvas. Smith would follow that up with a barrage of strikes to end the match and give Le his first MMA loss in seven bouts.

MMANews.com spoke with Le earlier today and he told us that he is looking for a return to the cage following the loss in the spring. "I'm hoping to get back in the cage in April or May on CBS or Showtime."

A bout with Jake Shields, who would take the vacated title in a bout with Robbie Lawler to decide who would be champ after Le gave the title up, seems out of the question as Shields is heavily rumored to be facing Dan Henderson in his first title defense and Le wouldn't be considered a number one contender following the loss to Smith. Le did not have any particular opponent picked out and said that he would leave that up to Strikeforce to decide.

Le also informed MMANews.com that he plans to leave the cage again following the April or May for another movie project. He did not have a concrete answer on how long he would be out.
