Colorado Mixed-Martial Arts Fight Scene Well Represented

By JOHN SPECHT Staff Writer

Shane Carwin. Georges St-Pierre. Duane “Bang” Ludwig. Brendan Schaub. Eliot Marshall. Nathan Marquardt. Rashad Evans. Donald Cerrone.

See a pattern yet? Probably not…

These are in fact some of the more popular fighters on an ever growing list of those that either hail from Colorado, or have strong training ties to the area, and have fought in the UFC or WEC. Some of this has to do with the close proximity for the region to the famed Greg Jackson camp in New Mexico, which creates opportunity for quality, high level sparring partners, not to mention the altitude factor when choosing a place to hold a fight camp.

Also is the fact that Gracie Bara product and Renzo Gracie black belt Amal Easton, has multiple gyms in Colorado. This has created a strong passion for MMA and jiu-jitsu in the state, drawing top fighters from all over to train at his academy and roll with fighters already here. Some of the fighters under Amal include Brendan Schaub, Shane Carwin, and Eliot Marshall noted above.

The University Of Northern Colorado (Greeley, CO) wrestling coach Leister Bowling has also been tapped for his wrestling/grappling advice and knowlege of the sport, by both GSP and Carwin, and can always be seen in the corners of these two whenever fighting in the UFC.

Promoter Sven Bean and the popular MMA “Ring Of Fire” promotion has fueled a rabid fan base and started the Mixed Martial Arts careers of many of the fighters above, and others including former UFC fighter Alvin Robinson. Shane Carwin last held the Heavyweight belt before moving on when the UFC came calling.

Could the UFC Heavyweight Championship belt end up in Colorado on July 4? Stay tuned…
