With UFC 113 about one week away, we will be providing the last installment of the breakdown of the nights best money making chances. After all, you bet to make money, right?
In these articles, we will primarily look at the best underdogs to bet on. Obviously, we all realize who the best fighters are, and who's likely to win most of their fights. The problem with this, is the fact that you would have to go against the golden rule of staying within 3-5% roughly of what your total bankroll is to really make any money.
Conversely, if you pick a couple of the best underdog matchups on each card (plus follow the sport enough to identify which ones) and stay within your 3-5%, your returns will be much greater, when weighed against the risk of losing. Keep in mind though, winning at betting MMA is never really an exact science. It still takes a certain amount of gut feel, instinct, knowledge of MMA, and let's be honest, LUCK.
In what is sure to be a great fight, and possible “Fight Of The Night” contender, we look at the matchup between Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout coming in at a respectable -200 vs. Jeremy “Lil' Heathen” Stephens playing the role of underdog at a +160.
If you are a die hard MMA fan, you know that the baddest uppercut in UFC history was thrown by Stephens, and the power that he posseses in his hands, as does Stout. A lot of luck goes into this one, as either fighter could be a victim of the others KO if one mistake is made. But for the money factor, this is another great opportunity to go with a solid underdog pick in Stephens.
I will wrap up this installment by looking at the main event. Lyoto Machida comes in as the obvious favorite again at a -200, with Shogun Rua at a +160. Basically, we are looking at the same numbers as the above Stout vs. Stephens fight. Same returns. This one could easily go Shogun's way, which is why it makes the cut. That wouldn't be bad for fans though, as it would setup a rubber match to settle the score between these two once and for all.
