Aldo vs. Gamburyan Title Fight To Headline WEC 51 On 9/30

MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will be headlining the WEC 51 card scheduled for September 30th at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. His opponent? Former UFC fighter and Ultimate Fighter finalist Manny Gamburyan.

The fight has reportedly been agreed to by both camps and will be for Aldo's undisputed WEC featherweight title.

Gamburyan earned the title shot with his impressive first round knockout victory over former champion Mike Brown at the WEC debut pay-per view event back in April.

Since dropping his last two fights in the UFC, Gamburyan has gone 3-0 in the WEC as a featherweight with the aforementioned Brown knockout, as well as victories over Leonard Garcia and John Franchi in 2009.

Champion Jose Aldo, who has quickly risen up the mythical pound-for-pound rankings (currently at #5 in the Rankings) is coming off his highest profile victory to date — a one-sided unanimous decision victory over former WEC posterboy Urijah Faber. That victory was also at the debut WEC PPV, serving as the headline bout.

Aldo has gone undefeated for over four years, compiling a 10-0 run since his lone career loss to Luciano Azevedo back in 2005. He has yet to drop a fight in the WEC, going 7-0 since joining the promotion back in June of 2008, with all but the Faber fight ending via KO or TKO inside the distance.

WEC 51 will air live on the Versus cable channel on Thursday, September 30th.
