Rumor On Jake Shields Opponent For UFC 170-Pound Debut

MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

According to a report at, the opponent for Jake Shields' debut in the UFC welterweight division will be Martin Kampmann.

This comes after yesterday's report from the Shields camp that noted the former Strikeforce champion would be fighting at 170 upon arrival into the UFC's octagon, and that he would be coming straight out of the gate against a top contender in the company.

Kampmann has a 8-2 record in the UFC (17-3 overall) and recently moved himself up the crowded welterweight ladder with a big win over Paulo Thiago at UFC 115 in June. His two defeats came against top contenders Paul Daley and Nate Marquardt.

Shields has a (25-4-1) record, with his last three victories coming in the middleweight division including his last victory over Dan Henderson in April. Shields is currently riding a 14-fight win streak and has not dropped a bout since 2004. If the rumors of a fight with Kampmann are true, one would assume a victory in that performance would lead to a potential title shot against Georges St-Pierre sometime down the road.

The Shields-Kampmann fight is still unofficial at this point, as the actual announcement of Shields in the UFC has yet to be made still.
