Roy Nelson revealed some news during his appearance on the ESPN 2 program “MMA Live” earlier tonight. After discussing his inspiring performance against Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117 this past Saturday night, Nelson extended his appearance by claiming he had an ESPN exclusive as the guys were wrapping up the interview.
MMA Live host Jon Anik asked Big Country what the news was, and in typical Nelson fashion, it took a few attempts to get the full answer out of him. Nelson revealed that he's “going under the knife” soon, without informing what the actual surgery is for. When asked what specific operation he was having, Nelson simply stated that he was going to get his knee “cleaned up” and “repaired.”
The guys asked him for an estimated return time and Nelson claimed he would hopefully be back after the Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira rematch at UFC 119, so that he could be the next to fght Nogueira. The Mir-Nogueira II bout will be on September 25, so one would assume Big Country will be on the shelf until at least October.
Big Country explained that he wanted to fight Nogueira next because it seems that fighters get a title shot after beating him, citing Frank Mir and Shane Carwin as examples.
Gotta love that guy.
