Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez watched on in anticipation Saturday night at San Jose's HP Pavilion as part-time rival, part-time friend Josh Thomson took on the highly regarded Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante in the co-main event of the “Diaz vs. Noons II” card, which aired live on the Showtime premium-cable channel.
Melendez, who worked commentary for the Thomson-Cavalcante bout, was not shy about disagreeing with the judges decision, which he made clear during the televised broadcast.
After being revealed as the winner of the bout, Thomson had a message for Melendez during his post-fight interview. “Knock, knock” were the words Thomson directed towards his former two-time opponent, a comment which the Strikeforce lightweight king gave Tony Medina and MMANEWS.COM a response to in our exclusive post-show interview with Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez.
In regards to the “knock, knock” comment, Melendez told MMANEWS.COM, “If he said 'knock-knock,' I'd be like, 'hey JZ [Cavalcante] I think you won that fight. That's what I have to say to that.”
Melendez continued, “But you know Josh is cool and I think it makes it look good, the rubber-match, and I'm looking forward to that.”
What does the Strikeforce champ think about a rubber match with Thomson? “He said it himself, I'm his kryptonite. So I'm gonna run with that. I feel really confident.”
As the interview wrapped up, Melendez offered one final comment about his opinion of Saturday night's big lightweight showdown. “Great fight tonight — but honestly — in my true opinion, I think JZ won that.”
