Prior to Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz deciding the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 137 in October, a potential new number one contender for a shot at the winner could be crowned earlier in the evening.
The UFC announced this weekend that BJ Penn and Carlos Condit will meet on the main card of the GSP vs. Diaz mega-fight.
The bout has the potential to create a new number one contender in the welterweight division as Condit has strung together four straight wins since debuting in the UFC with a loss to Martin Kampmann. His last two wins have been impressive first round stoppages over Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim.
It could be a different story for Penn, who returned to the welterweight division after losing twice too Frankie Edgar in 155lbs. title fights. He's beaten Matt Hughes decisively and fought too a draw with Fitch since the return, but has already lost to St. Pierre twice during a previous stint at welterweight and in a superfight while holding the UFC Lightweight Title. Penn could get a shot but stands a better chance if he were to beat Condit and Diaz defeats St. Pierre.
