UFC hires Jon Anik from ESPN
By Sergio Non, USA TODAY
LAS VEGAS — Jon Anik has gone from anchoring a TV show about mixed martial arts to calling fight action full-time.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Thursday introduced Anik as its newest on-air talent. He will handle play-by-play duties for live events on FX and work on The Ultimate Fighter when it moves to that channel next year, UFC President Dana White said.
Starting in 2012, FX will occupy the slot currently filled by Spike TV with UFC Fight Night cards, which generally feature rising talent and veterans trying to climb back up the ladder.
Anik has been the anchor for ESPN's MMA Live show since its inception as an online program in 2008. The weekly show started airing on TV last year.
He has play-by-play experience for mixed martial arts. Anik had that role for Bellator Fighting Championships during its inaugural season in 2009.
A TV commentary partner for Anik hasn't been chosen yet, White said. It will not be Joe Rogan, the main commentator for broadcasts of UFC's premier shows on pay-per-view. Mike Goldberg has been the play-by-play man for pay-per-views for more than a decade, with a tenure that precedes UFC's purchase by current owner Zuffa.
