Former UFC lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar was recently interviewed by ESPN.com and spoke about a number of topics, including his fight against Cub Swanson next month, Jose Aldo and the flashy, outspoken Conor McGregor.
It was expected that the winner of Edgar vs. Swanson would go on to fight Jose Aldo (if he gets past Chad Mendes later this month, until Dana White recently stating that Conor McGregor is actually the next likely title challenger.
Edgar commented on McGregor leapfrogging him for a title shot, telling ESPN:
“It doesn’t surprise me. As a promoter, it’s probably the smart thing to do. He’s got a lot of buzz going. Why have him lose before they can make money on that fight?”
“I do want to fight for the title after I beat Cub, but if I have to fight somebody else, what am I going to do?” he asked. “I can’t sit around and feel sorry for myself. I have to go to work and get it done.”
As for a potential fight against McGregor, Edgar was confident and to the point. “I know I match up well against him,” he said.
