Coach Says He Tried To Stop Marquardt-Gastelum Fight, But Officials Wouldn’t Let Him

Apparently Nate Marquardt didn’t need to suffer as much damage as he did in his UFC 188 loss to Kelvin Gastelum in Mexico City this past Saturday night.

According to Marquardt’s coach, Trevor Wittman, the fight should have been stopped sooner than it was, and if it were up to him, it would have been.

Wittman spoke with this week and explained that he actually tried stopping the fight — twice — but was told to get out of the way because fans couldn’t see the action inside the Octagon.

“Taking needless damage is not good in this sport,” said Wittman. “They grabbed me, and their concern was that people couldn’t see. I’m sitting there swearing at these guys, and they’re like, ‘Get down. No one can stop the fight but the referee or the doctor.'”

Officials would eventually stop the fight in between the second and third rounds, awarding the TKO victory to Kelvin Gastelum.
