UFC Officially Announces New Fights, Details For January Boston Card

Just minutes ago on the new episode of UFC Tonight, the promotion began to flesh out the the card for UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz on Sunday January 17, 2016. Being the  same day as the NFL’s conference championship games with constant promotion throughout, it may be one of the UFC’s biggest cards of the year. While the location of Boston, Massachusetts had been reported a few weeks ago, it wasn’t officially announced until just now.

As for the card, here’s where it stands right now:

T.J. Dillashaw (c) vs. Dominick Cruz for the UFC Bantamweight Championship
Anthony Pettis vs. Eddie Alvarez in a lightweight fight
Travis Browne vs. Matt Mitrione in a heavyweight fight
Tim Boetsch vs. Ed Herman with the two middleweights moving up to light heavyweight

All four fights are worthy of a main card, and being a Fox Sports 1 card, there would be at least two more main card fights as well as at least five preliminary fights. All fights announced so far feature ranked fighters on both sides except for Boetsch and Herman, though Boetsch was ranked at middleweight recently.

Dillashaw vs. Cruz is the best fight that can be made at bantamweight and one of the best that can be made in the sport, with Cruz trying to regain the title he never lost from someone he’s often referred to as having influenced. Pettis-Alvarez is, while not quite a dream match, is a fantastic fight on paper in terms of relevance and potential action. Browne and Mitrione are the two most athletic heavyweights on the roster looking to rebound. It’ll be interesting to see what else is booked for the card.
