The UFC returned to Glendale, Arizona tonight for UFC on FOX 29 – and what a show the worldwide leader in mixed martial arts had for fight fans.

In the main event of the evening, top-ten ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier defeated Justin Gaethje in an epic back-and-forth slugfest that concluded with a knockout win for The Diamond late in the fight.

The co-featured bout of the evening saw the return of former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit, however, he fell victim to fellow veteran Alex Oliveira. Oliveira was able to bloody Condit badly before locking in a guillotine choke that forced the tap.

UFC Glendale Main Card

  • Lightweight: Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje

Round 1:

Poirier eats a few leg kicks from Gaethje and is able to respond with a left and right hook. A left hook lands for Poirer and he lands a nice lead right after it. More leg kicks from Gaethje, and he’s also cut above his eyebrow and is wiping away the blood. A leg kick from Gaethje takes Poirier’s leg out form under him and he falls momentarily before popping back up. Poirier lands some nice uppercuts inside the pocket and lands a nice body shot. Poirier is unloading some very nice combinations on Gaethje. A nice uppercut lands for Gaethje now.

A lead left lands for Gaethje and he just blocks a front kick to the body. Poirier is ripping off some hellacious shots now but Gaethje doesn’t back down and continues to press forward. Poirier misses wildly on a hook to the body and continues to eat leg kicks. A hard shot to the liver lands for Poirer and now he presses forward with shots to the head. Gaethje slips after missing a high kick put pops right back up. A right hand lands for Gaethje and he follows up with a kick to Poirier’s lead leg. A heavy hook lands for Poirier and he follows up with two more. Gaethje lands an uppercut and a right hook afterwards. The round comes to an end.

Round 2:

A nice combination from Gaethje to open up the round and Poirier just lands a high kick in response. Another leg kick lands for Gaethje and both men land a big shot before an accidental eye poke from Gaethje stops the action. The action resumes but Poirier’s eye is still noticeably affecting him. Poirier lands a big hook and a kick to the face inside the pocket. Gaethje responds with a hook and uppercut before eating a big shot himself.

A big leg kick from Gaethje again and he follows up with a big right hand. Poirier rips off a big combination and goes for a takedown but fails. Another big combination from Poirier and he ends it with a leg kick of his own. Another leg kick lands for Gaethje and he responds with one of his own. A low kick form Gaethje is caught and Poirier tries taking things to the ground but he fails. Gaethje has Poirier against the cage and the round comes to an end with a huge spinning attack from Gaethje.

Round 3:

Gaethje has a low kick caught put he turns around and spins out of it. More leg kicks from Gaethje and Poirier is able to get a takedown but Gaethje shoots right back up. Another huge leg kick from Gaethje and Poirier is able to land a hook. Yet another leg kick from Gaethje and a hard right hand lands for him afterwards. Poirier is stunned a bit and Gaethje is picking his shots against the cage.

They clinch now and Gaethje lands nice knees to Poirier’s body and legs. Uppercut to left hook combo from Gaethje and he follows up with a leg kick. Another leg kick from Gaethje and he puts a right hand behind it. Poirier lands a huge hook and elbow before Gaethje clinches up with him. Another eye poke from Gaethje and the referee takes a point. The action is temporarily stopped. Back to action now with seconds left and the round comes to an end with an alleged eye poke from Poirier but nothing is done.

Round 4:

Poirier lands a big combo that wobbles Gaethje bad. Poirier smells blood and is coming in hard. Gaethje is out on his feet and the referee steps in. That’s it.

  • Welterweight: Carlos Condit vs. Alex Oliveira

Round 1:

Oliveira opens up with a high kick that is blocked and he misses on a wheel kick. Oliveira lands a right hand on Condit, who comes in on a flying attempt. Oliveira clinches Condit up and takes him down into half guard. A scramble ensues and Condit gets a takedown of his own and gets on top. Oliveira has Condit’s neck locked up but he gets free. An elbow lands from Condit on top and he’s able to posture up and get off some ground-and-pound.

Condit takes the back and is working for the rear-naked choke. The round comes to an end and Oliveira survives a few deep chokes.

Round 2:

A high kick from Condit leads to a scramble and Oliveira on top of Condit in full guard. A nice upkick lands for Condit to both Oliveira’s face and body. Condit gets to his feet but gets taken down by Oliveira again shortly after. Condit is able to scramble and gets a huge takedown of his own. Condit is cut badly after an elbow to the back of his head. Blood is all over both men and Oliveira lands an upkick before locking in a standing guillotine. After it goes to the ground Condit isn’t able to break free and is forced to tap.

  • Middleweight: Israel Adesanya vs. Marvin Vettori

Round 1:

Vettori opens with a leg kick and just misses a high kick. Adesanya responds with a leg kick of his own and continues to dodge shots nicely. Vettori clinches up Adesanya against the cage and Adesanya just avoids a trip. Vettori misses a few inside trips and Adesanya is able to seperate and land a leg kick. Adesanya catches a kick from Vettori and just misses on a shot. A high kick is blocked by Vettori and he eats a leg kick. Adesanya eats a kick to the body and lands a hard liver shot. An accidental eye poke from Adesanya stops the action.

A body shot lands for Adesanya and Vettori responds with a hard one of his own. Vettori misses wildly on a high kick and misses on a leg kick as well. A nice spinning back kick to the body lands for Adesanya and the round comes to an end.

Round 2:

A few left hands land for Adesanya. Vettori comes in for a takedown but Adesanya is able to escape nicely. A nice 1-2 lands for Adesanya and he follows up with a leg kick. Another big leg kick lands for Adesanya and he lands a beautiful counter right hand. A lead elbow lands for Adesanya and the pair exchange gestures with one another. A jab lands for Adesanya. After ducking and dodging for a nice couple of seconds from Adesanya the round comes to an end.

Round 3:

Vettori tries to open the round strong with pressure but so far Adesanya is doing nicely to counter. A left hand lands for Adesanya and he sprawls nicely on a Vettori takedown attempt before finding himself on the bottom. Vettori is still on top but Adesanya finds his full guard and Vettori isn’t getting enough offense off. Adesanya gets to his feet and after a huge scramble Vettori takes Adesanya down again.

Adesanya gets to his feet but Vettori is still on him like glue. Not enough action and the referee separates them. Adesanya does well to dodge Vettori’s offense but isn’t landing much of anything himself either. The fight comes to an end with a missed high kick from Adesanya.

  • Women’s strawweight: Michelle Waterson vs. Cortney Casey

Round 1:

Waterson opens up with a leg kick and follows up with another. Casey just misses on a right hand and gets caught with a kick to the body coming inside. A nice leg kick to front high kick combo from Waterson. Waterson is looking very fast and Casey clinches up and separates after landing a knee. Waterson lands a nice hook as she circles out. A nice lead left hook lands for Casey and she presses Waterson up against the cage. Waterson switches to control before separating.

A big right hand lands again for Casey that knocks Waterson back, and again Casey presses Waterson against the cage. Waterson lands an elbow that separates the clinch. A trip from Casey and Waterson scrambles to her feet and takes Casey down herself right into full guard. Casey throws up a triangle attempt but Waterson avoids it. Now Casey goes for the armbar but Waterson defends for now. Some nice ground-and-pound from Waterson in top position. Waterson stands up and the round comes to an end.

Round 2:

Waterson again opens up with a few leg kicks and now Casey presses forward with some good hooks and a high kick. Casey presses Waterson against the cage again but Waterson gets a big elbow in before separating. Right hand lands for Waterson and Casey just misses a high kick. A lead hook lands for Waterson and Casey tries walking The Karate Hottie down before Waterson gets a takedown.

More submission attempts being thrown up form Casey on bottom, but Waterson is landing some good ground-and-pound. Casey is going for a submission now and Waterson escapes a deep armbar and continues her ground-and-pound. Another armbar attempt and Waterson is again able to escape. Waterson has now escaped form several armbars on the ground. Casey stands up and Waterson keeps her at bay with a leg kick. A kick makes Casey stumble backwards and fall to end the round.

Round 3:

A nice high kick lands for Waterson and she follows up with a few kicks to the body. Casey misses on some hooks and then lands a few right hands. Waterson presses Casey against the cage but they separate after a Waterson elbow. Waterson gets a nice Takedown and Casey sweeps to get the back and attacks Waterson’s arm again. Waterson is able to move out of it and now Casey is attacking Waterson’s leg. Again Waterson escapes and she lands a hard right hand as Casey stands up.

Another side kick from Waterson and she shoots in for a takedown. Casey sprawls nicely and is on top and delivering some elbows. Casey going for the back now and is delivering some shots. Thirty seconds to go and Casey gets the back and is going for the rear-naked choke. She transitions to an armbar now and Waterson has her fingers clamped tight. Time expires just as Waterson loses her great. Amazing fight.
