Gastelum: When I Say I’m Going To KO Whittaker In First Round, I Mean It

Kelvin Gastelum isn’t backing down from his prediction of a first-round knockout over Robert Whittaker.

Gastelum will challenge Whittaker for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title this Saturday night (Feb. 9). It’ll be Gastelum’s first 185-pound title shot. The middleweight title clash will headline UFC 234 inside the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Gastelum Stands By Early KO Prediction was able to speak to Gastelum before the big event. The challenger said he has no regrets predicting a first-round knockout win:

“When I say things like, ‘I’m going to knock him out in the first round,’ I mean it, but I’m ready for a 25-minute war. But when I see Rob, I just see hard work. I see a lot of heart. I see a lot of will. Just like me – I don’t bring a lot of special abilities like, let’s say, Israel Adesanya. He has a special talent. I’m not necessarily the greatest striker or the greatest wrestler or the greatest jiu-jitsu guy. I’m just in there to win fights, and that’s what I think that Rob is good at, too.”

As for Whittaker, he believes he’s too strong and too fast for Gastelum. The champion puts a lot of stock in his two battles with Yoel Romero. Whittaker won both bouts and had to overcome adversity as he was almost stopped in the rematch. Time will tell who will get their way. Be sure to stick with for live coverage of UFC 234.
