UFC Uruguay Results: Shevchenko Decisions Carmouche

UFC Uruguay went down tonight (Sat. August 10, 2019) from the Antel Arena on ESPN+. The world’s leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion compiled an excellent card for fight fans to enjoy.

It was headlined by a meeting between UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and Liz Carmouche. The co-headliner saw Vicente Luque vs. Mike Perry in a welterweight bout will take place.

Humberto Bandenay vs. Luiz Garagorri in a featherweight bout, light heavyweights Ilir Latifi vs. Volkan Oezdemir, and Oskar Piechota vs. Rodolfo Vieira in a middleweight bout were featured on the main card. Opening the main card saw a featherweight showdown between Enrique Barzola and Bobby Moffett.

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Liz Carmouche

It was a technical fight that saw the two fighters strike it out. Carmouche tried out a takedown entry but that was really the only difference in round two. Carmouche was certainly the bigger woman, but Shevchenko started to find her range.

This is when the fight started to go in the way of the champion, who continued this style that fits her well.

In the third round, Valentina dropped her with a strike but didn’t capitalize. They were stood up before Valenta changed things up again by connecting with a takedown. As time went on, Valentina showed off her takedown skills and grappling. In these situations, Liz tried to go for submissions but was never able to fully lock on with them.

In the end, the judges gave the decision win to Valentina, who retained her title.

Vicente Luque vs. Mike Perry

Luque took the lead on the scorecards in round one with more strikes and kicks being thrown. Perry was looking for to counter and land a lighting strike. Luque started to put combos together and had Perry back peddling. Perry’s face was busted up due to the damage that he was taking. Perry showed off his chin and ate the strikes while trying to mix up his strikes. In the third round, Perry changed his strategy and looked for a takedown but it was a little too late. Perry took him down but was caught in a guillotine choke that saw Perry pour blood from his head. Perry eventually got out. The judges gave the win to Luque.

Humberto Bandenay vs. Eduardo Garagorri

Luiz had a gameplan and went straight for it as he landed an early takedown in round one. Bandenay managed to get back to his feet and threw some wild shots but Luiz took him right back down. Garagorri’s striking looks great early on as does Bandenay’s wrestling. Bandenay was rocked by a flurry but kept headhunting. As the fight went on, Luiz started to take over but it was a close back and forth fight. In the end, it was who grabbed the decision win to Garagorri.

Ilir Latifi vs. Volkan Oezdemir

These two had no interest in grappling but rather a kick boxing match. Latifi slipped for a moment and Volkan pounced but was never able to land a good shot. Volkan was looking for a big finish. They ended round one with a brief clinch. Volkan started to hunt him down as the second round went on with Latifi slowing down. Volkan clipped him and Latifi fell down. Volkan pounced but Latifi recovered. Volkan dropped him with a bomb then finished it up on the ground.

Oskar Piechota vs. Rodolfo Vieira

Oskar managed to score a brief takedown in the first round but couldn’t keep him there. Halfway through the first round, Vieira managed to score a takedown where he kept him pinned up against the cage. Vieira did a good job of just smothering him. Oskar tried to do anything until landing an up kick to stand back up to close the round. Vieira tried to end off where he was in the first round but he started slowing down as he got tried. Vieira went for full guard but Oskar pushed him off and they went to back to striking. Vieira locks in a textbook arm-triangle and eventually forces the tap.

Enrique Barzola vs. Bobby Moffett

It was a slow-paced first round as both were trying to find their range. A noticeable height advantage likely contributing to Barzola’s difficulty finding his entry range. Barzola landed a quick late round takedown. Barzola changed his strategy in the second round as he was looking for takedowns.

Moffett tried his hand at a takedown but was lite up with strikes as a result. They would later trade strikes with both men taking their lumps. Bobby came out looking for a takedown but it resulted in more of him clinching and landed strikes while the fans booed. In the end, the judges gave the unanimous decision win to Barboza by split decision.
