Leon Edwards Wants Colby Covington Next With Title Shot Off The Table

Leon Edwards is hoping to fight Colby Covington next time out.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 21 last Saturday, Edwards made his long-awaited return to the Octagon to face short notice replacement, Belal Muhammad. In the first round, the Englishman had a ton of success and landed a head kick that appeared to rock Muhammad.

To begin the second round, Edwards poked Muhammad in the eye and the fight was over and called a no-contest. After the event, Muhammad was adamant he deserved an immediate rematch, yet for Edwards he doesn’t believe that make sense. Instead, he is looking to fight Colby Covington.

“I’d like to be back straight away,” Edwards said on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. “The fight (with Muhammad) was one round. I didn’t get to get in my flow. (I want to fight) straight away, really. I feel like May. We’re trying to get Colby Covington, so we’ll see what he says. So May, early June. We’ll see. But I want to be active this year. I had a long year-and-a-half off, so if we can bang them out, I’m going to keep banging them out.”

From a rankings perspective, having Leon Edwards and Colby Covington fight one another certainly makes sense. The winner would get the winner of Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal 2 at UFC 261. However, it is uncertain if “Chaos” would take the fight as he had been holding out for a title shot.

Before the no-contest, Edwards was on an eight-fight winning streak with his last loss coming to Usman back in 2015. During the run, he had beaten the likes of Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, Vicente Luque and Gunnar Nelson among others.
