Stephen Thompson is just looking to fight but he knows the majority of the top-five at welterweight don’t want to fight him.
Currently, only Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal are booked against one another, besides that, no other top-five welterweight is booked. Thompson has made it clear he is open to fighting Colby Covington and Leon Edwards, yet they don’t appear interested in fighting him. If he can’t get a fight, “Wonderboy” says he’d be open to fighting Nate Diaz.
“I would love the end of April or May. I’m so glad to hear that they’re allowing the fans to come back in to watch the fights, and I bet it’s gonna be a packed house in Florida. So I know a lot of fighters are talking about it,” Thompson said on Submission Radio. “They’re excited about it. Hopefully, end of April or May the timeline is. So I’m back into training.
“I’m itching to step back out there again,” Thompson continued. “If nobody in the top-five wants it, man, give me Nate Diaz, bro. Give me somebody with a name. At least make it worth my while.”
Although Stephen Thompson wants to fight Nate Diaz, it’s uncertain if the Stockton native would want the fight. Diaz is likely only looking to fight big names like Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Masvidal. But, if he wants to try and work his way to a title shot, fighting Thompson certainly makes sense.
Thompson has not fought since December when he beat Geoff Neal in the main event to extend his winning streak to two. Nate Diaz, meanwhile, has not fought since he suffered a doctor stoppage TKO loss to Masvidal at UFC 244 for the BMF belt. He made his return to the Octagon at UFC 241 and earned a decision win over Anthony Pettis.
