Miesha Tate is set to end her retirement on July 17 and is focused on getting back her title.
After Tate lost to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205, she shockingly announced her retirement from the sport. Since then, she has been working with ONE Championship but due to the pandemic, she got the itch to return and will return on July 17 against Marion Reneau.
If she beats Reneau, Tate could very well be closing in on a title shot, which she says is her goal.
“Well, a lot of that depends on how this first fight goes. Truth be told, nobody knows that. I don’t know that, either,” Tate said to SCMP MMA. “I don’t know how well I’m gonna do. There’s tons of questions to be answered. I mean, I good. I feel like I’m gonna do great. But it’s totally another thing once the cage door closes. Like, you gotta perform or see where you’re at. So this is gonna be a great test marker for me. I have been out for a little over four years, so there’s tons of questions that I have to answer for myself as well.”
As Tate suggests, there are questions she needs to answer like how she will look after not fighting since 2016. Ring rust could be a factor, but she still has been in the gym and appears ready for a return and get the rematch with Nunes.
“But granted I do everything that I believe that I’m capable of and I’m feeling like I can do, then that will set me definitely in the right direction. And I could see a title fight after one more win after that,” Tate continued. “So I think as little as two wins but maybe three or four. And again, it just kinda depends on performance. It also depends on myself, too. It’s like, I want to fight Amanda again. I want to be a champion again, no doubt about it. But I also don’t want to rush the process.”
Miesha Tate fought Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 where she lost by submission to lose her bantamweight title. Although the fight was rather one-sided, Tate still is a big name and the rematch would be interesting, especially due to the fact the champ has practically cleared out the division.
In her career, Tate holds notable wins over Holly Holm, Liz Carmouche, Jessica Eye, and Sara McMann among others.
