John Kavanagh is joining Scott Coker’s latest venture, Ki MMA, as the newly launched promotion prepares to enter the global mixed martial arts landscape in 2027.
The longtime coach of Conor McGregor revealed his ambassador role during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, explaining that he will use his extensive industry connections to help the organization establish itself.
Kavanagh joins Coker and veteran matchmaker Rich Chou as the promotion builds its team ahead of launch.
John Kavanagh Explains His Role At Ki MMA
Kavanagh said his responsibilities will extend beyond simply representing the promotion, with his experience and network potentially helping Ki MMA secure fighters, venues, and other resources.
They offered me a type of ambassador role, if you will. Basically, whatever needs to be done, I get done,” Kavanagh explained.
Over these last couple of decades, I’ve built up a good network, especially in Europe, but really around the world too. Whether it’s helping out with getting fighters, helping out with venues, whatever needs to be done, I’m there to help.
The 48-year-old Irishman has spent decades working in MMA and is best known for coaching McGregor throughout his rise to superstardom. His appointment gives Ki MMA another established figure with international connections as it prepares to recruit talent and organize events across multiple continents.
Coker announced Ki MMA in September after a two-year absence from the sport. The former Strikeforce and Bellator president is returning with substantial financial backing, with the promotion reportedly securing $60 million in funding from an ownership group that includes Griffin Gaming Partners co-founder Peter Levin.
The new organization plans to launch in early 2027 with a 32-fighter featherweight Grand Prix. Competitors will come from North America, Europe, Asia and South America, with the tournament designed to crown the promotion’s inaugural 145-pound champion.
Ki MMA also intends to stage super fights featuring established names, giving the organization an opportunity to attract recognized fighters alongside emerging prospects. Another major distinction is its decision to hold bouts in a ring rather than the cage commonly used by modern MMA promotions.
Rich Chou, who previously worked alongside Coker at Bellator, will oversee talent relations and matchmaking. The promotion has also indicated that it intends to prioritize fighter treatment as it competes for talent in an increasingly crowded market.
