Daniel Cormier Believes Conor McGregor Is Done In MMA

ByAndrew RavensMixed Martial Arts Journalist

Daniel Cormier isn’t sure Conor McGregor will ever fight in the UFC again.

The former two-division champion turned commentator weighed in on McGregor’s UFC 329 loss to Max Holloway, a fight that was stopped 1:09 into the first round after McGregor’s knee gave out. Cormier said he leans toward believing that was the last time we’ll see “The Notorious” inside the octagon.

The night also produced a grim first for McGregor. For the first time in his UFC career, he did not land a single significant strike, going 5 of 11 on total strikes before the stoppage. Holloway, by contrast, landed 12 of 19 significant strikes in the 69 seconds the fight lasted, and was waving the referee in late rather than pressing for more damage.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, as transcribed by Bloody Elbow, Cormier questioned whether fans would buy back in after a finish like that.

If you ask me truthfully, I am more likely to tell you guys that it’s not gonna happen than it will happen. He’s very unique and I think the whole week showed that he’s the biggest star we have and the whole week showed that. I just wonder if he even does try to come back once again, do people even buy into it again and say they wanna see Conor McGregor go at it one more time? It really sucks as well, because the card itself was insane.

McGregor’s Last Two Outings

UFC 329 was McGregor’s first fight since July 2021, and his previous two appearances both ended in losses to Dustin Poirier. At UFC 257 in January 2021, Poirier stopped him with punches in the second round. At UFC 264 that July, McGregor broke his lower leg in the opening round and the fight was called off after the doctor’s stoppage. A planned 2024 comeback against Michael Chandler fell through when McGregor suffered a broken toe in training.
