Esteban Ribovics became the only UFC 332 fighter to stumble at the scales after missing weight for his lightweight showdown with King Green.
Ribovics stepped onto the scale Friday ahead of Saturday’s event at Delta Center in Salt Lake City, coming in at 156.5 pounds. The lightweight limit for a non-title bout is 156 pounds, leaving the Argentine 0.5 pounds over the mark.
Green had no trouble making weight, officially coming in at 155.5 pounds. “El Gringo” made a second attempt with the curtain used to remove his shorts, but still could not get down to the required limit.
The fight will go ahead at a catchweight, with Ribovics forfeiting 20 percent of his purse to Green as a penalty for the miss.
Ribovics Pays The Price For Missing Weight
The weight miss is particularly costly for Ribovics because he is now ineligible to win a $100,000 Performance of the Night or Fight of the Night bonus.
“King”, meanwhile, remains eligible for the bonuses and could potentially collect up to $200,000 if the matchup earns Fight of the Night and he wins.
“El Gringo” had made significant sacrifices to accept the bout, reportedly cutting short a family trip to Disney World in Orlando to take the opportunity against Green.
The miss was the only blemish on Friday’s UFC 332 weigh-ins, with all other fighters successfully making their respective limits.
In the main event, Natalia Silva weighed 125 pounds and Wang Cong came in at 124.5 for their vacant UFC women’s flyweight title fight. The championship became available after longtime titleholder Valentina Shevchenko vacated the belt while recovering from injuries.
Deiveson Figueiredo and Payton Talbott also successfully made weight for their bantamweight co-main event, coming in at 135 and 135.5 pounds, respectively.
