Daniel Cormier believes Leon Edwards is the perfect opponent for Nick Diaz’s return.
Recently, Diaz’s manager came out and said Diaz is 100 percent fighting next year and Cormier believes it should be against the Englishman in a title eliminator bout.
“Put Nick Diaz in there with Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards,” Cormier said on DC & Helwani (h/t BJPENN.com). “This would be a great fight, and if he, if Nick Diaz can stop the run of Leon, of ‘Rocky’, maybe Nick Diaz gets that title shot. I think that’s the fight (to make). Don’t do ‘Rocky’ like that. Let him get a big-time fight.“
Leon Edwards has not fought in over a year when he beat Rafael dos Anjos by decision. He is currently on a seven-fight winning streak but has been passed over for big fights like Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal. So, he doesn’t have anyone to fight so perhaps Diaz does make sense as his return bout.
Nick Diaz, meanwhile, has not fought in nearly six years when he lost to Anderson Silva but it was overturned to a no-contest. Before that, he lost by decision to Georges St-Pierre for the belt and Carlos Condit by decision for the interim title.
Diaz is a massive name and already many people have called for the fight. So, whether or not Nick Diaz’s camp would be interested in a Leon Edwards fight is to be seen.
