Georges St-Pierre is walking away from mixed martial arts competition.

St-Pierre has been recognized as one of the greatest fighters in all of combat sports. “Rush” has captured Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gold in two divisions. He’s widely regarded as the greatest welterweight of all time. Outside of the Octagon, he’s been viewed as a role model and an ideal ambassador for the sport.

GSP Announces His Retirement

They say all good things must come to an end and St-Pierre’s fighting career is no exception. Earlier today (Feb. 21), St-Pierre announced his retirement during a press conference. St-Pierre said there would be no tears as he is happy with his decision.

Reports had noted that St-Pierre was hoping to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov. Ariel Helwani asked St-Pierre if the report was accurate. “Rush” confirmed that he did want to fight “The Eagle,” but the UFC had other plans. St-Pierre made it clear that he doesn’t believe he has the same fire to compete that he once did.

When asked about a defining moment in his career, St-Pierre had a surprising answer. The former welterweight king said it was when he was dropped by a head kick against Carlos Condit and was able to survive for the unanimous decision victory.
