Daniel Cormier put it out there that he’d be interested in seeing Leon Edwards welcome back Nick Diaz to the UFC. Now, “Rocky” has chimed in on the possibility.
It was recently announced that the oldest Diaz brother is planning a return to Octagon action in early 2021. Diaz hasn’t competed in six years since a unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva, which was later overturned to a No Contest after failed drug tests from both men. Now, all the chatter revolves around who will welcome the former Stirkeforce welterweight champion back to the UFC, and Edwards’ name has entered the mix.
Cormier had the following to say on this week’s episode of “DC & Helwani” regarding a potential Edwards vs. Diaz fight.
“Put Nick Diaz in there with Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards,” Cormier said. “This would be a great fight, and if he, if Nick Diaz can stop the run of Leon, of ‘Rocky’, maybe Nick Diaz gets that title shot. I think that’s the fight (to make). Don’t do ‘Rocky’ like that. Let him get a big-time fight.“
Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Edwards expressed interest in a potential fight with Diaz. Edwards believes the matchup is beneficial for both parties, and fully expects a victory if he were to be locked inside the Octagon with the longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran. (H/T MMA Junkie)
“That fight looks fantastic,” Edwards said. “He’s a big name in the sport, he’s been around for a long time, so that fight would be fantastic. It would be better for him (to fight me). If you come and beat me, a guy on an eight-fight win streak, that would put me in line for a title shot, right? So, I think it would be a great fight.
“And to come and beat like the new guy, which is me, the up-and-coming guy that’s dominating everyone, beating everyone, and for him to come back and challenge me – he’ll never beat me, but it’s a good fight, interesting fight. And that fight, I 100 percent want it. I want to compete against Diaz.”
