Alexander Volkanovski has had a whirlwind 72 hours. The featherweight beat Jose Aldo in his Brazil by unanimous decision, seemingly becoming the number one contender.
However, that is not the case as it was reported that Frankie Edgar is getting the title shot against Max Holloway at UFC 240. And, to make matters worse, the Australian is now hospitalized in Chile with a blood infection.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Volkanovski was complaining about a sore foot, redness on the foot and feeling sick before leaving Rio de Janeiro. Then, as the plane landed in Chile, the 30-year-old started to feel worse when his team decided to take him to the hospital.
Then, his manager in Rhys Dal Cin posted an update on social media.
“Hey all, Alex is ok,” he started. “He is being treated for an infection that developed quickly while on our flight home. We are currently in Chile and will provide updates as they come to hand. The medical staff have been fantastic, he’s in good hands, and Alex is in great spirits!”
As of right now it is not known when Volkanovski will be discharged from the hospital or how serious the infection is.
