Pursuing dreams, cage and classroom
Ultimate fighter Andy Wang tells RYAN PEARSON how he juggles his two pursuits.

LOS ANGELES

Pursuing your dreams in the steel cage and classroom takes the same approach.

At least it does for 29-year-old Andy Wang, a mixed martial arts fighter with an 8-6 career record. Wang, who was born in Taiwan and grew up in the Los Angeles area, is also a high school teacher and is pursuing a graduate degree in education at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

He quit his academic pursuits temporarily several months ago to focus on his UFC matches, which are featured in “The Ultimate Fighter 5,” airing weekly on Spike TV and Bravo.

But he'll be back in the classroom soon enough, with his sights set on three eventual goals: Becoming UFC champion, earning a doctorate degree in education, and landing a job as a school principal or administrator.

In this asap video, Wang explains the mantra that keeps him going: Dedication, desire, discipline.
