Bellator fighter John Gunderson (35-16-2), who was scheduled to fight Alexander Sarnavskiy (28-2) at the Bellator 128 event, announced that he is not only pulling out of the bout, but also announced his retirement from the sport of MMA.
Gunderson issued the following statement regarding the matter:
“I’ve had enough fights. It’s time to move on. I don’t want to be that guy stuck in the sport for too long, past their prime. I feel like there’s a lot of guys doing that because they need money, and that’s when you start getting hurt. I can’t keep going into fights training only a couple of hours a day. If you’re going to fight like an MMA fighter, you need to put your whole day into training for a fight, and at my stage of my career, I can’t do that.
There’s not a whole lot of MMA right now, unless you’re in the UFC and you’re one of the top dogs. So making money is what it’s all about. If I can save up the right amount of money, I’ll open up my own gym. When one door closes, another one always opens.”
