Andy Ruiz Jr and Tyson Fury Help Needy Families in Las Vegas

Andy Ruiz Jr. will be facing Chris Arreola on May 1 but the former heavyweight champion took some time off of training to help those in need in Las Vegas.

Tyson Fury joined Ruiz in Las Vegas to help with the Project Hope initiative and helped distribute 500 bags of groceries to families in Las Vegas. Ruiz’s charitable nature near his bouts has been constant in his boxing career. When he and Anthony Joshua had their rematch in Saudi Arabia back in 2019, he visited the Disabled Children’s Association and the Charity Committee for Orphans Care in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In a press release from Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), Ruiz said, “This is a really important event for my community. All the Mexican people, all the Raza. There is so much love here, and I just want to show everyone that anything is achievable.”

In the first match against Joshua, Ruiz was a heavy underdog at +1300 to beat Anthony Joshua for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles. He did so via TKO in round seven becoming the first Mexican Heavyweight to hold those titles. While he did lose the subsequent rematch via unanimous decision, he has not been shy about making the proper adjustments to get there again.

Ruiz has switched training camps and now trains under Eddy Reynoso and alongside Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in preparation for his upcoming bout against Arreola next month.

“Anything is possible. Nobody believed I could become a heavyweight champion…and what do you know? I ended up becoming the first Mexican heavyweight champion of the world.”

Ruiz versus Arreola airs at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT live on FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View for $49.99 on May 1 from the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
