Jermell Charlo Scores a KO Over Cota to Send Message to Harrison

Jermell Charlo scored a devastating third-round knockout win over Jorge Cota this past Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Event Center. While fans of the sweet science were still coming off the rivalry from the previous evening’s Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship’s sixth event, Charlo produced a highlight reel finish that sets up a rematch with Tony Harrison.

Harrison was Charlo’s original opponent but had pulled out of the scheduled bout due to injury, and Cota was the man that replaced him. Charlo made an example of Cota and thanked him for stepping up so he can send a message to Harrison. “I’d like to thank you Cota. He stepped in the ring. The guy who proclaims he has the title didn’t show up,” Charlo said.

He added that, “I’m trying to be great. I plan on getting the rematch next and then getting all of the belts by the end of the year. Tony Harrison is in the building, He’s lucky he didn’t accept this fight with me. I’m a much better fighter.”

Harrison is the WBC Super Welterweight World Champion and Charlo lost his belt to him in December of 2018. While the PBC on Fox Fight Night event aired on a Sunday, Charlo’s finish may have been one of the top trending finishes in combat sports last weekend.

Harrison was sitting ringside for the bout and got the message said his ankle will likely be healed soon and the rematch could still happen this year. In a video posted by Champside, Harrison declined to address Charlo directly saying, “It’s his night, I didn’t come to the fight to ruin his night.” However, believes Charlo’s style is “tailor-made perfect for what I do.”

Do you think hype is building for a Harrison versus Charlo rematch?
