UFC president Dana White revealed at the UFC 117 pre-fight press conference (watch full video here) today that there will be two number one contender matches at this weekend's big pay-per view event in Oakland, California.
In addition to the Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos officially being labeled a number one contender bout for a shot at the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez in the next UFC heavyweight title fight, the welterweight showcase at UFC 117 now has title implications as well.
Dana announced at the presser that the winner of Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves will indeed get the next UFC welterweight title shot against the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck fight, tentatively scheduled for December 11.
White joked that Fitch would fight for the title if he wins, even if the champion at that time happens to be his teammate and training partner Josh Koscheck.
Jon Fitch (22-3) vs. Thiago Alves (16-6) will serve as the co-main event at UFC 117 “Silva vs. Sonnen” this Saturday night on pay-per view, live from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The main event on the evening will feature UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva defending his title against number one contender Chael Sonnen.
