Bellator President Scott Coker recently hinted at some big international plans for Bellator MMA in 2015 during a recent discussion with MMANews.com.
During the Bellator 131 media day event at Dave & Busters in San Diego, California, MMANews.com correspondent Michael Moody caught up with the Bellator President to ask him two follow-up questions after their initial in-depth discussion.
After Floyd Mayweather made headlines in the MMA community when revealing his intentions to take his Mayweather Promotions business into the MMA promotion side of things, MMANews.com asked an experienced MMA promoter in Coker for his take on the subject.
“Boy, you know what? I don’t know what he knows about this business, but it’s a very tricky business,” said Coker. “But listen, if he’s into MMA and he wants to support it and he wants to back it, I’m 100-percent behind him.”
Coker continued, “I think he should stick to boxing, this is a much different animal. Promoting boxing is a very special type of skill. They’re very good at it and he’s a great fighter, probably the best in a long time, but MMA is a little bit different and it’d take him a while to learn the business.”
The Bellator President also gave a quick tease towards the future of the company outside of the North American market.
“I’ll tell you what, we do have international plans for 2015,” said Coker.
When asked which country the promotion had its’ eye on, Coker kept his hand close to his vest.
“Can’t say [laughs],” said Coker. “That’s top secret!”
