FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE FIGHT NETWORK TO AIR AWARD-WINNING BOXING DOCUMENTARY DURING GAY PRIDE WEEK
Toronto, Canada — June 5th, 2007 – The Fight Network’s – North America’s first and only all combatant sports and entertainment channel is pleased to announce that it has obtained the exclusive Canadian rights to the award winning HBO documentary, “Ring of Fire — The Emile Griffith Story”. “This might not only be the best boxing documentary of the last ten years — this may be the best boxing documentary ever made!” said Brian Sobie, Vice-President of Programming for The Fight Network. “Directors Ron Berger and Dan Klores brilliantly recap the tragic story of two brave boxers and the times in which they lived.”
The film tells the story of Emile Griffith and Benny Paret. In 1962, during a live televised fight Griffith literally pummelled Paret into a coma. Paret then died 10 days later in the hospital.
Subsequently it was revealed that Paret had called Griffith a “Maricon”, the Spanish word for “Faggot”. This was unheard in those times when even someone like the flaymboyant entertainer Liberace was not acknowledged to be gay by the majority of the population.
Ring of Fire was awarded the Best Documentary at The Sundance Film Festival. It made its debut on HBO in the United States and its airing on The Fight Network will be the film’s television premier outside the United States “Whether you are a boxing fan or not this is a film that will certainly move and affect you in many ways,” added Sobie.
The film will premier towards the end of Gay Pride Week in Toronto on Saturday June 23rd at 9:00 PM Eastern. It will repeat numerous times the following day. Check www.thefightnetwork for start times in your area.
