Frankie Edgar Believes Interim Belt Is For The Real Title

The fighters for UFC 200 are going around the country doing media obligations to promote the big event in July. Earlier today, the UFC was in New York City and on Good Morning America, Dana White announced that Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones would headline the main event.

Further down the card is a quiet interim featherweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo. The fight is for the interim belt since McGregor was originally planned to fight Diaz but both have been pulled from the card entirely after Mystic Mac refused to do media obligations. Many have criticized the interim belt like Jon Jones, but Frankie Edgar is fine with fighting for the interim belt.

“It’s the number one contender belt, that’s what you call it,” Edgar said at the New York press conference.  “I have a feeling Conor may never come back down to 45, so interim will be for the real belt.”

So it seems that Frankie Edgar has the mentality that the belt he is fighting for in July will be for the real belt. White has speculated that McGregor would fight at UFC 201, 202, or even 203 but without a specific opponent in mind. It makes sense for the featherweight champ have to fight the winner of Edgar/Aldo but it isn’t sure if the McGregor/Diaz fight will be postponed entirely or if McGregor has a different opponent in mind.
