MELENDEZ SITS OUT DEC. 8 STRIKEFORCE

By Loretta Hunt

Undefeated rising California lightweight Gilbert Melendez (11-0) will not be participating in December 8’s Strikeforce “Triple Threat” event in San Jose, CA, as was earlier announced. Melendez is the lightweight champion for the promotion.

Melendez, who withdrew from his Nov. 5 PRIDE Bushido 13 bout against Shinya Aoki (8-2) due to a ruptured bursa sac in his elbow, has re-agitated the injury in training, according to his manager Chris Sanford, and has decided to sit the event out.

Sanford says Melendez will take time off to recuperate, possibly reappearing for PRIDE’s Shockwave 2006 event on New Year’s Eve against Aoki.
