( GREEN BAY , WI ) – The cage made its inaugural debut in the Gladiators Fights series in Green Bay , Friday as the Radisson Grand Ballroom at the Oneida Casino played host to Gladiators Fighting 46 “The Rumble in the Cage”.
In the main event of the evening, complete with purple hair, crowd favorite Jon “White Trash” Friedland of Milwaukee overcame a takedown and escaped a full mount to submit Travis Pierzinski of Lake City , MN at 2:27 of the first round.
In other bouts:
Welterweight Danny “Boy” Downes of Milwaukee forced Jared Polden of Eau Claire , to tap at 1:09 of the first round as a result of repeated blows.
Reed Ehmke of Milwaukee defeated Jimmy Bleau of Marquette , MI with an arm at 1:43 of the first round.
In a back and forth battle of heavyweights Jesse “James” Mason of Green Bay gained a ground and pound victory over Brian Shaleen of Marquette at 2:44 of round two when referee Al Wichers stopped the contest.
Heavyweight Rob Kay of Green Bay could not overcome the combination of the barrage of punches and exhaustion and succumbed to the cumulative effects and went down in a heap at 2:35 of round two giving at TKO victory to Jimbo Abate of Rockford , IL .
Lightweight Anthony Pettis of Milwaukee scored perhaps the quickest tap out victory in the history of the Gladiators Fighting series when fill-in Lonny Amdahl tapped after going down after violently bouncing off the cage attempting to avoid a shoot from Pettis. Amdahl, who apparently was only momentarily stunned, appeared to be fine immediately following the contest.
Allen Woodcock of Champaign , IL did not fare as well and needed the assistance of the ringside physician and emergency personnel after suffering a grotesquely broken leg at 1:01 of the opening round. Woodcock was injured while blocking a leg kick from his opponent Harvey Kosowski of Green Bay . Referee Al Wichgers immediately intervened and Woodcock did not suffer any additional injury after going down. The official decision was Kosowski as a result of the referee stopping the contest.
In a featherweight contest that was fought under vale tudo rules Dan LaSavage of Milwaukee scored a victory over Gabriel Jones at 1:00 of the first round when Jones tapped as a result of LaSavage’s ground and pound.
In a women’s bout Chrissy Taetsch of Green Bay scored a first round ground and pound tap out victory over Jasmin Davis of Milwaukee .
Jason Allar of Waukesha was awarded the victory over fellow middleweight Tim Nixon of Green Bay , when Nixon was forced to tap at 1:29 of the first round after suffering an apparent knee Injury.
Perhaps the most impressive and crowd-pleasing moment of the evening came when Ken McClelland of Cedar Rapids, Iowa lifted six-foot-nine-inch, four-hundred pounder Terry Kleiman of Green Bay off of his feet, slamming him to the ground and then gaining full mount. Kleiman finding himself in the unfamiliar position of being on his back had no response to the barrage of punches that McClelland peppered him with and tapped 1:29 into the first round.
In the opening bout of the evening Jose Rodriguez of Waukesha won by tap out as a result of a rear naked choke at 1:25 of the first over Robert Mondloch of Green Bay in a featherweight bout.
The cage will make its Milwaukee area debut at Gladiators Fighting 47 Caged Coliseum. October 6, 2007 at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion at State Fair Park in West Allis . Opening bell is 6:00 for the undercard, 8:00 for the main event bouts.
