Torres returns for UFC 75 bout against Liaudin
By Thomas Gerbasi
Hawaii’s Anthony “The Crush” Torres returns to the Octagon for the first time in over a year on September 8th, when he battles Jess “The Joker” Liaudin in a UFC 75 welterweight bout at the O2 Arena in London, England.
“I know he (Liaudin) is coming off a win against Dennis Siver, and he’s a tough opponent,” said Torres, whose last Octagon bout was a first round submission win over Pat Healy in August of 2006. “I’ve been training hard since I recovered from my injury, and I’ve just been waiting for this call.”
Torres (5-1), a veteran of the second season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, replaces Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury.
London’s own Liaudin (11-8) impressed fight fans in his Octagon debut at UFC 70 in April, submitting Dennis Siver with an armbar at 1:21 of the first round. Now “The Joker” — who will be finishing up his training camp in California with Dan Henderson and Team Quest — looks for UFC win number two.
“I saw Anthony on TUF and he looked like a well-rounded fighter,” said Liaudin. “I respect that he comes from Hawaii – you know he is going to be a tough scrapper who refuses to quit, so we should be in for an interesting night. As I consider myself to be pretty well-rounded too, this one has got 'fight of the night' potential. I intend to test his stand up, then his ground game, and then finish with a little ground and pound – that's the plan anyway.”
UFC 75 is headlined by the title unification bout between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton `Rampage’ Jackson and his PRIDE counterpart, Dan Henderson. Also slated for the card are intriguing matchups between Mirko Cro Cop and Cheick Kongo, and Michael Bisping and Matt Hamill.
