The Nate Diaz trilogy could mark the end of Conor McGregor’s career, says one former UFC fighter.
McGregor finds himself with just one victory in nearly five years. He’s still the UFC’s biggest draw, but some are wondering if the bloom is off the rose. McGregor has suffered two losses to Dustin Poirier, with the most recent outing resulting in a broken tibia.
During an interview with MMAMania.com, Dan Hardy said he believes a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz could be the one that ends McGregor’s career.
“It’s also the reason we haven’t seen the [third] Nate Diaz fight. I think the reality is that the third Nate Diaz fight might be a nail in that coffin. It would be a really tough fight for him. I think he’s realistic about that so I think he’s biding his time and waiting to cash that check. It’s a long road back now. Regardless of how he does it or who he faces, he’s got a lot to prove to himself and the fans. I hope he has the energy to do it because I would definitely like to see him back in there.”
McGregor and Diaz are 1-1 against one another. Back in March 2016, Diaz submitted McGregor via rear-naked choke. The “Notorious” one rebounded, defeating the Stockton native in their Aug. 2016 rematch via majority decision.
McGregor’s next move is unknown as he heals from his broken tibia. UFC President Dana White has expressed his belief that a rematch with Poirier would make sense. With that said, Poirier will likely receive a UFC Lightweight Title shot against Charles Oliveira first.
