UFC announced on Wednesday that Alexander Gustafsson suffered an injury during training and will not be able to compete against UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 178 on September 27th.
Undefeated, top-ranked 205-pound contender Daniel Cormier will now step up and face Jones for the title in the new UFC 178 main event.
It’s a tough break for the Swedish fighter, but the announcement states that the fight has been “postponed,” so he’s likely in line to face the winner of Jones vs. Gustafsson.
Cormier told Joe Rogan after his last fight:
“Jon Jones, you can’t run away from me forever. I’m the kid at the wrestling tournament that is always in your bracket. No matter where you go, I’m coming. You better hurry because I’m getting better.”
Jones has been UFC’s Light Heavyweight Champion since 2011, racking up seven consecutive title defenses against the likes of Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, and Vitor Belfort.
With the new main event, here’s the updated card for UFC 178:
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
– Jon Jones (c) vs. Daniel Cormier
– Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier
– Dominick Cruz vs.Takeya Mizugaki
– Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero
– Cat Zingano’s vs. Amanda Nunes
