UFC legend Anderson Silva tested positive for an anabolic steroid (Drostanolone) in an out of competition drug test back on January 9th, according to a statement released by UFC. They also found Androsterone, which is a form of endogenous testosterone. Both substances are banned by the World Anti-Doping (WADA) code.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission likely will be doing further testing to confirm the preliminary results.
Update: Anderson Silva Denies Taking Steroids, “Devastated” By Failed Drug Test
From UFC’s statement:
“Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world. UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results.
“The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes.”
Silva got a decision victory over Nick Diaz last weekend at UFC 183 after a 13 month layoff – with Diaz himself failing a post-fight drug test with elevated levels of marijuana metabolites (150 nanograms). This is Diaz’s third offense for marijuana (2nd time in UFC).
