Although Chael Sonnen’s manager claimed that the American Gangster will soon be returning to the Octagon, West Linn’s finest is singing a different tune.
Sonnen appeared on the Jon Anik and Kenny Florian podcast this week and addressed the UFC return rumors.
“As far as MMA goes, man, I think I ran my race,” said Sonnen. “I’ve got some good memories and I think that’s where that ends.”
Sonnen added that he’s having enough fun competing in Metamoris matches, and is looking forward to competing in the 99-kilogram division at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission wrestling championship in August.
Sonnen also noted that he and his wife are expecting the birth of his first child any day now.
The former UFC title contender also shared his thoughts on Daniel Cormier’s title victory over Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, calling the performance “inspiring.”
“I thought it was inspiring,” said Sonnen of D.C.’s victory over Rumble. “One because I’m a wrestler so I’m always excited to see wrestling do well. Like, anybody that comes from an art form and then they go on to become a guy that becomes champion. But two, he won one for the old guys. Hey, Kenny [Florian] I’m sure you can relate, but when a guy that age, 36, 37 years old, comes out and wins the world championship it makes us feel young again. It makes you feel like the world doesn’t just belong to 18 to 25 year olds.”
The pride of West Linn, Oregon also touched on a potential rematch between Cormier and the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.
“Every time I’ve ever had a defeat that’s what I’ve thought, give me one more shot, let me try this again,” said Sonnen. “Except against Jon Jones. After I fought Jon Jones I was like, I get it. I’m good, I get it, go enjoy your run, I’ll be over in the corner with the dunce cap on. That’s what I thought. Jon Jones is just another deal, man.”
