SBG Ireland’s head honcho has indicated that the potential fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being negotiated at 147 pounds.
Coach Kavanagh appeared as a guest on FOX Sports Australia recently, and to no one’s surprise, fielded questions about the UFC lightweight champion’s fight against Mayweather Jr. When asked, more specifically, about details such as dates and venues, in addition to the weight class both men would meet at, Kavanagh was accommodating:
“There’s a lot of fingers in the pie on this one”, said Kavanagh. “There’s different promotions, different organisations, different commissions that are involved, but as far as I’m concerned, I really believe it’s going to happen this year. That’s the mindset I have. Let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork. We’re training for it.”
As for the weight class which both men would meet at, Kavanagh’s answer was not exactly surprising. In recent years, Mayweather Jr. has fought at welterweight or junior middleweight, for which there is a threshold of 147 to 154 pounds. Kavanagh’s words would definitely be consistent with those of many observers who would assume Mayweather would be reluctant to go too far above or beyond this weight:
“There’s 147 pounds being thrown around. 67kg. Conor’s fought at 66kg [145 pounds] plenty of times so that’s not going to be an issue but that’s one of those points to be argued about by the guys in the background.”
Despite McGregor having struggled to meet the 145lbs limit in the past, he has enjoyed some of his best performances at that weight. Granted, with rehydration the Dubliner will (hypothetically) invariably enter the ring much heavier come fight night. As for the bout itself, with no evidence of any real progress being made, fans’ optimism of the super fight happening may once again hit a valley before the next peak emerges.
