On this week’s edition of UFC Tonight, Dana White announced two new championship fights.
The UFC President confirmed the next title defense of both UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier, as well as UFC Middleweight Chris Weidman, and both fights could be viewed as somewhat of a surprise.
After the confusion regarding Weidman’s next opponent, as White seemed torn on whether or not the number one contender, Luke Rockhold, would be getting the shot, or if Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza would, ultimately, UFC decided to match Weidman and Rockhold for the next 185-pound title bout.
In the case of Cormier, while many assumed Ryan Bader would be his first official title defense, especially after the two had their confrontation at the UFC 187 post-fight press conference, UFC surprised fans by announcing that D.C. will be defending his title for the first time against top contender Alexander Gustafsson.
White did not announce the dates or locations of either fight, likely due to the fact that UFC is still waiting to find out whether or not they will be able to finally make their New York debut at Madison Square Garden on December 6th, as that is the date that the promotion has reserved for the venue, should MMA become legalized in the state.
