Georges St-Pierre is looking to make peace with his former opponent Nick Diaz after many years.
Georges St-Pierre is now retired from mixed martial arts. Although he was teasing a comeback recently, it seems as though the Hall of Fame fighter is going to stay out of the Octagon for good. He was recently a guest on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani show and spoke a bit about many topics from his past, to the best fighters right now and gave his opinion of a few. The thing that was most surprising was that he had very strong feelings about a former opponent of his, Nick Diaz.
“It feels like I never made peace with Nick Diaz,” St-Pierre said. “I just like to have some sort of camaraderie with my former opponents, because we shared a moment. we made money, we shared a moment, we have a bond together. For me, he’s one of the guys that I never had the chance to talk with him after the fight and I feel like it’s missing a little bit in my life.”
St-Pierre and Diaz fought each other back in 2013. In the lead-up to the fight, there was some bad blood between the two. St-Pierre said that he found Diaz to be disrespectful, stemming from Diaz missing press conferences and other media obligations. St-Pierre was known as a “good guy” of sorts in MMA and even now in retirement, he expressed that he was never really all that fond of fighting.
“Well, I think we all have different reasons why we’re fighting. I fought, you know, because of the passion,” St-Pierre said. “I never liked to fight to tell the truth. You know, I never enjoyed it a second, like people think I’m lying, but it’s the truth. I never love to fight. I never like it. When people ask me why you’re fighting them. I guess it’s because I like to win better than I hate to lose.”
Diaz has been toying with the idea of returning this year. Perhaps St-Pierre will have the chance to clear the air at a UFC event this year. Or perhaps they can meet inside the cage again
